Celebrating Local Agriculture: The Story of Chestnut Creek Farm
At CNY Regional Markets, we believe that every vendor has a unique story that adds to the rich tapestry of our community. Today, we’re excited to spotlight Chestnut Creek Farm, a remarkable local farm that has been thriving for five years.
A Journey from Marine Engineering to Farming
Chestnut Creek Farm is led by an inspiring individual with an unconventional background. After studying Marine Engineering and spending a decade working in the engine rooms of cargo ships, he made a bold transition to agriculture. While this may seem like a leap from the ocean to the fields, his engineering skills have proven invaluable on the farm. Whether it’s fixing a tractor or wiring a greenhouse, that expertise has set the foundation for his farming journey.
When he first launched Chestnut Creek Farm, the focus was primarily on supplying local restaurants and small grocers. It wasn’t until recently that he took the plunge into the CNY Regional Market, and the experience has been transformative. He describes the market as an incredible place filled with amazing customers who share a passion for fresh, local produce.
Commitment to Quality
At Chestnut Creek Farm, they cultivate around 30 types of USDA-certified organic vegetables, along with herbs, flowers, and berries. For many customers, the organic certification is a crucial factor, providing assurance that they’re purchasing clean, healthy products. The farm has earned a reputation for delivering produce that not only tastes exceptional but also lasts longer—something their customers greatly appreciate.
The Value of Farmers Markets
Shopping at farmers markets like CNY Regional Markets is a win-win for everyone involved. It’s not just an enjoyable outing; it supports local farmers and the community. Customers can find unique products that aren’t typically available in grocery stores, and the freshness is unbeatable. Our vendor doesn’t just sell at the market—he shops there too! He loves picking up eggs, bread, and seasonal fruits, all of which showcase the quality and variety available at the market.
Building a Business from the Ground Up
The journey to farming was unexpected for him. About ten years ago, he purchased 20 acres of land, which had once been a cornfield but was now overgrown. With no prior farming experience beyond a childhood garden, he took on the challenge of restoring the land. As he learned and grew, he became increasingly passionate about producing high-quality vegetables. Ultimately, he realized that his dedication deserved a business of its own.
A Day in the Life on the Farm
Life at Chestnut Creek Farm is busy and fulfilling. With a small team, everyone pitches in to ensure everything runs smoothly. During the harvest season, their days are filled with harvesting, planting for winter greenhouses, managing their Veggie Subscription service, and distributing produce to local restaurants. There’s always weeding to be done, but the hard work pays off.
Supporting Local Agriculture
As Chestnut Creek Farm celebrates its fifth anniversary, we want to join Chestnut Creek Farm in emphasizing the importance of supporting local agriculture. Buying local food not only benefits your health but also strengthens local farms, the economy, and the community. In a food system that has faced numerous challenges—from the consolidation of retailers to the rise of GMOs—choosing to shop at farmers markets like ours can make a significant difference.
We are proud to have Chestnut Creek Farm as part of our market community. Their commitment to quality, sustainability, and local engagement embodies the spirit of what we strive for at CNY Regional Markets. So, next time you’re at the market, stop by and say hello to our vendors. Together, we can celebrate the bounty of fresh, local food! 🌱🥕💚
